Lumicom’s objective is to provide luminaire producers with the most cost effective means of financing the sound environmental disposal of waste industrial and commercial luminaires. To achieve this, Lumicom is the only Producer Compliance Scheme (approved by the Environment Agency) that has a permanent infrastructure in place for the receipt of luminaires and other associated electrical equipment. As a result over 97.5% of all waste luminaires recycled through approved systems are recycled under the auspices of Lumicom.
The method of treatment varies. Some recyclers shred the luminaires along with other metal scrap such as cars. The shredded material then moves under magnets, through agitators, water tables and other automatic sorting machinery, until it emerges as clean metals, plastics, etc. Other recyclers use QZ machines to crack open the equipment so that the contents can be hand picked and sorted as the scrap moves along a conveyor belt. And lastly, some recyclers dismantle the luminaires by hand.
The results of all this activity are placed on the world market and returned as raw material for manufacturing goods, thus completing the sustainable life cycle.
