Q: What is Lumicom?
A: Lumicom is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lighting Industry Association and is a registered Producer Compliance Scheme under the WEEE Directive in the UK.
Q: What is the aim of the WEEE Directive?
A: The European Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive aims to reduce the amount of WEEE going to landfill by requiring Producers to take responsibility for their products at the end of life.
Q: How do I know if I am a Producer?
A: A Producer is a person or business that manufactures, imports or is responsible for a brand in any member state.
Q: Does it cover all products?
A: For lighting All luminaires are in scope as of 1st January 2019 with few exceptions which can be found on the Government website .
Q: What about the lamps? How do I know what is B2B and what is B2C?
A: With the exception of any filament types, almost all lamps, or light bulbs, are B2C. Only those used for stadium lighting and cinema projector lamps or those lamps solely designed for industrial or commercial use are B2B.
Q: OK I think I am a Producer. What do I have to do?
A: Do you place more than 5 tonnes of B2B and B2C products on the UK market?
If yes then you need to become a member of a Producer Compliance Scheme like Lumicom. If no, then you are classed as a Small Producer and have 3 options.
- Register directly with the Environment Agency here
- Ask a PCS like Lumicom to register you on your behalf.
- Join a PCS as a full member.
